Sustainable Strategies at Surf Simply
Bordering Nosara’s natural reserve and just a short walk to Playa Guiones you will find Surf Simply: a surf coaching resort in Costa Rica. Unlike other surf schools, Surf Simply is committed to the wholesomeness of your experience: learning and improving your surf technique through its innovative teaching system, sharing with the other guests, and living the paradise among the Ceiba trees of the natural reserve.
Surf Simply is unique for its emphasis on shared spaces, such as the dining room, the pool, the fire pit, and the living areas that connect to the video and training rooms.
Surf Simply: LEED Platinum Certification
Surf Simply was designed by Gensler as the first resort dedicated to surf coaching. With its proximity to Playa Guiones and the natural reserve, it was essential for the building to be simple, elegant and sustainable at the same time. The sustainable strategies that were implemented into the construction were: solar panels to produce local energy, onsite solar water heater, large windows to illuminate with natural daylight, rainwater collection, onsite wastewater treatment for irrigation, and high efficiency water accessories to reduce water consumption.
Sustainability begins with the design and conceptualization phases of the space. Strategies such as conservation and planting of native flora, the selection of local building material, and furniture handmade by local artisans were all taken into consideration with the aim of contributing to the community and the compatibility of the site.
Surf Simply is LEED Certified Platinum, the highest award a building can receive for minimizing environmental impact during its construction as well as in it’s day to day operation.
The heart of the project are the common spaces, but the uniqueness of the project is our teaching system. Surf can build happiness” Rupert Hill, owner of Surf Simply.
